"Anyone who has witnessed a bird of prey circling high above an open field has likely seen a red-tailed hawk, the most widespread hawk in North America. This hawk is usually best identified by its brick-red tail, but take care, there are many colour variations. Plus, the hawk's short, wide tail can appear almost transparent when viewed from below, and juveniles have darker colouring.The red-tailed hawk hunts small animals and reptiles from above, sometimes swooping down on birds. One of its greatest strengths is its ability to adapt and exploit rapidly changing environments. Red-tailed hawks can be seen perched on fence posts, trees and hydro poles bordering agricultural fields where they survey the landscape for a meal-an ecological form of rodent control that farmers now readily embrace.''

Swooping in for the Catch

As a legal tender offering by the Royal Canadian Mint, the obverse of this 2020 1/2 oz Silver Canada Red-Tail Hawk coin displays the right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, created by Susan Blunt. Inscriptions include "ELIZABETH II . 2 DOLLARS . 2021."

The reverse features a finely detailed Red-Tail Hawk, wings spread wide and talons extended as it begins to descend to swoop in on its next meal. The active scene is incredibly executed to feature both the beauty of this creature, as well as its powerful hunting prowess. The background field is lightly-brushed to create a faint, frosted appearance, giving prominence to the hawk in flight.

A wide band encircles the rim, which displays precise radial lines. Inscriptions in the band include, "CANADA . 2020 . FINE SILVER 1/2 OZ . ARGENT PUR." The 9999 silver fineness is displayed above the hawk. To the right of the image is the micro-engraved lasered maple leaf in the coin's field. The last two numerals of the release date are micro-engraved in the center of the maple leaf image. The numerals can only be viewed under magnification. This adds to the cutting-edge security integrated into the coin.
