$70.76This remarkably stunning 2020 St. Helena 1 oz Silver Japanese Trade Dollar BU is presented with a design faithful to that of the original Japanese Trade Dollars, issued 1875-1877. Upon Japan's enactment of the gold standard in 1897, all the 1 yen silver coins were demonetized. This included the Trade Dollars, however, later they were marked as silver and released for use in Taiwan, Korea, and Southern Manchuria.
This 2020 St. Helena 1 oz Silver Japanese Trade Dollar BU is the fourth edition to be released in this low mintage, beautifully produced, and highly popular series of five historic Far East Trade Dollars.
In 2018, the East India Company launched a remarkably well-produced new 5-coin series. This series is dedicated to paying rich tribute to the historic and internationally significant silver Trade Dollars of the Far East. The inaugural release was the beautiful reproduction of the British Trade Dollar featuring Britannia. This was followed by the very striking U.S. Trade Dollar displaying the exceptionally detail image of Lady Liberty seated. The third release was the incredibly stunning Chinese Trade Dollar. Each of these were produced in cooperation with British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic.
The obverse features the distinctive portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, produced by Jody Clark. A fine beaded band encircles the inset. Fully encircling the band are the inscriptions, "QUEEN ELIZABETH II . ST. HELENA . ONE POUND . 2020." At the rim is a beautiful oriental styled scroll band.
The reverse showcases a remarkable design reproduction of the original Japanese Trade Dollar. This highly-stylized depiction of the dragon brings into prominence its magnificent serpentine body. The creature has twisted his body in a circular motion in its attempt to grasp the pearl. The image is set within a circular center inset, encircled by a fine, beaded band. Fully encircling the band are the inscriptions "THE EAST INDIA COMPANY . TRADE DOLLAR." At the rim is a beautiful oriental styled scroll band.
Considering the historical significance of this 5-coin series, as well as the beautifully stunning designs, and a very limited mintage of only 5,000, this 2020 1 oz Silver St. Helena Japanese Trade Dollar will be an important addition to your collection!
