The South Africa 1 Rand
Gold Coin is produced of 0.118 ounces .917 fine gold. The obverse side bears the image of Jan van Riebeeck, the administrator and founder of Cape Town. The reverse carries the well-known springbok illustration with the words 'South Africa' surmounted in Afrikaans and English with the year of minting.
First introduced in 1961, the Rand replaced the Half Pound as the official South African currency. This change was in conjunction with South Africa becoming a Republic in 1960. The final mint date was 1983.
